What are the best boxing gloves for sparring?
If you’re looking for a sparring boxing glove, Punch® will aim to provide you with a few key features that you’ll need to look out for.
Glove Padding – A sparring glove must be fitted with enough padding to protect both you and your opponent while sparring. This will help avoid any serious injury so you can go hard while sparring!
Weight – 16oz – Ideally, the best sparring glove weight is around 16oz. This is the best weight/size for a few reasons. Firstly, training with a heavier glove will help you during boxing fights because generally, fight nights will use 8oz/10oz gloves. So by training in 16oz, a smaller weighted sized glove will feel much lighter and enables you to generally get more punches in during a round.
Hook and Loop closure – Make sure the glove comes with a Hook and Loop closure. This feature helps stabilise your wrist and keeps it in a nice position that will ultimately reduce injuries.
Attached Thumbs – The next tip is to look for gloves with attached thumbs. This helps your fingers and thumb avoid injury during sparring sessions.
What size do they use in boxing?
Boxing gloves are available in a wide variety of different sizes and weights for boxing. In general, a glove can start around 4oz and some of the more heavier gloves could be around 18oz/20oz.
In Boxing, the weight depends on the type of activity. Such as for Boxing fights, generally the best weight used is 8oz or 10oz. This is a lighter weight and allows the Boxer to swing harder for longer.
For Beginners & Amateurs
If you’ve just started Boxing for fitness or doing basic training at home, the bag mitt is the ideal glove to get started with. It’s a great glove for hitting pads and bags. In general, the bag mitt is a cheaper glove so you won’t need a big budget to start with. As a beginner you’re just starting out so you won’t need the most expensive gloves yet.
When you first start training it’s generally good to start on a punching bag. The bag mitt provides excellent protection for hitting a punching bag. Always buy a bag mitt that comes with a full hook and loop closure for extra support of the wrist. Without wrist support, you will likely develop wrist and hand injuries from extensive use. Using hand wraps or cotton inners will also help the mitt last longer from sweat.
A bag mitt is a great cheap way to get into boxing for training and fitness! We wouldn’t recommend the bag mitt for sparring.
A general purpose boxing glove is ideal for training and your training boxing glove will need to be capable of use during sparring, punching bag training and pad work. By purchasing the right training boxing glove, you can avoid carrying around 2 gloves for training (bag glove and boxing glove).
Our recommended training boxing gloves are the Trophy Getters. The Trophy Getters are our most popular gloves and come in a wide variety of colours/size ranges. You can purchase the Trophy Getters from 8oz all the way up to 18oz. They’re designed in full cowhide leather and offer the best thumb/wrist protection in the Punch boxing gloves range.
As a general rule of thumb for weight, 16oz is ideal for men while 12oz is ideal for women.
The best boxing gloves for sparring should provide a great combination of power and protection. In the sparring glove range we recommend either buying the Special Gloves or Armadillo Safety Gloves and we’ll explain why below.
The Special Boxing Gloves are sold only in 16oz weight and contains special features, which is why we named this glove “The Special”. Designed with a broad glove these gloves are great for scoring opponents in sparring. We recommend these gloves for heavy hitters that are looking for more power out of their punches. They offer good protection in defense and provide even weight throughout the glove. We wouldn’t use these boxing gloves on punching bags or pads.
The Armadillo is our safest boxing glove, it’s great for sparring and provides the best hand protection of Punch gloves. If hand protection is your top priority in heavy sparring / competition / training, then choose the armadillo glove. All padding is pushed to the front of the glove.
Compared to the Special Boxing Gloves, the Armadillo isn’t the best for defensive moves. However, they’re still great for scoring in sparring. Anyone can buy these gloves whether you’re a beginner or pro fighter.

For Wrist Support
Choosing boxing gloves with wrist support in mind will help you avoid painful injury in the long-term. Whether you’re boxing, kickboxing or training, wrist injuries are a common boxer injury from using cheap gloves with no support or padding. Performing wrist exercises before and after boxing workouts is a simple and quick way of preventing injury. Wrist exercises will help stretch out the tendons and help with elasticity in the joint.
All Punch boxing gloves provide excellent wrist support to prevent injury while boxing in training and competition. We have designed a strong wrist wrap that protects you from injury. For muay thai training to protect from kicks you will need a training glove that offers more wrist protection.
Dear Punch Equipment®,
I figured most people usually only contact a company if something is wrong or to complain.
I’ve boxed to keep fit for a few years and always picked up minor wrist injuries. I’ve been in Brisbane for the past year and purchased a pair of your urban boxing gloves. The standard of the glove is great and I haven’t had any wrist problems using them. The website and catalogue are also great and very informative.
For Competition & Fighting
A boxing glove for competition should provide both power and protection in fights. The weight, size and colour is also important.
Choosing fighting gloves depends on your weight and height. Ideally 8oz, 10oz and 12oz are the best weight sizes for competition as you’ll need smaller gloves compared to sparring or training.
Generally red boxing gloves are the most popular colour among fighters for a number of reasons.
1. Red Gloves are more visible during fights
2. Not showing blood to an opponent.
Red has been a good choice in the history of boxing as the colour is more visible during fight nights. Famous boxing images show the likes of Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson knocking out opponents using red gloves. Another great reason is red gloves don’t show blood on the gloves compared to other colours.
Competition and Fighting gloves can also be purchased from Punch Equipment®. Designed with full quality leather, the lace up boxing gloves are the best choice for fight nights or competition. Not recommended for general-purpose training because of the laces unless you have a professional trainer.
In the Punch range of gloves under $100.00, you can still find an affordable glove for training. Good boxing gloves don’t always need to be expensive and you can still get a decent amount of time out of a glove under $100.00. A glove under $100 would be perfect for someone just starting out with boxing and doesn’t want to spend much until they get more comfortable.
Our most recommended glove under $100.00 is the Urban PDX Titan Boxing Gloves. These gloves are designed intermediate boxing training and have a number of great features for a nice price point. This glove comes with full cowhide leather casing and is built to last years of training. They’re also equipped with a full hook and loop closure, Punchcool mesh insert, injected mould padding and more! Great for basic training and sparring.
- Black with red and white PDX design
- Solid Hook and Loop closure
- Full leather
- Full contact glove
- Injected moulded
- Size: 12-16oz
If you’re looking for an even cheaper glove, the Urban Boxing Gloves is a great choice for its price. This glove has less features compared to the Urban PDX Titan Boxing Gloves which is the reason for a cheaper price. This gloves comes in a wide range of weights/sizes and colours. The casing is Enduro 35 Synthetic material and will last a few years of training. Great for glove for basic training and ideal for Personal Trainers running mass boxing sessions.
For Punching Bags
When you’re training on a punching bag you will use a pair of bag gloves. A bag glove looks like a boxing glove but the difference is in the weight and size. A bag glove is lighter and smaller so you can train for a longer time period on a bag. Whereas a boxing glove is heavier and can be used for sparring or fighting.
A full wrap wrist glove is recommended to fully protect your wrists and hands during fitness training. A bag glove provides similar padding to a bag mitt, they also vent and dry out quickly. They’re nice and cheap for beginners or just for fitness use.
