How heavy are boxing gloves?

In this article, we’ll discuss how heavy boxing gloves can be and the different weights available.

WHAT IS THE WEIGHT DIFFERENCE IN EACH BOXING GLOVE?

If you’re wondering how boxing gloves weight weight is determined, the glove is weighed overall in ounces.
The size and amount of padding, casing, and linings are all contributing factors to reaching a determined weight.
A larger boxing glove with more padding will usually weigh more than a glove with less padding depending on the material size and density.
This is why 16 oz is the most recommended weight for sparring as it typically provides the most amount of resistance and a decent amount of padding to protect both boxers.

8 OZ

The 8 oz is the next step up from the 6 oz for youths, teenagers, and adults.
8oz are typically the lightest weight used in amateur and professional combat sports competitions.

10 OZ

A 10 oz boxing glove is ideal for larger teens and adults and is the most commonly used weight for amateur and professional competition.
It’s also one of the best weights for improving your boxing technique and speed on a punching bag or focus pads.
It wouldn’t be a great glove for sparring as it is very light and therefore would provide less protection all-round.

12 OZ

12 oz is one of the most popular weights for both larger teens and adults.
It’s used for all-round training, fitness, bag work and sometimes lighter weighted boxers use 120z for sparring.

14 OZ

A 14 oz boxing glove is a good starting place for moving into heavier weighted people.
It’s ideally another glove weight that can be considered an all-rounder.
A 14oz boxing glove can be used for training and sparring.

16 OZ

The 16 oz is generally the best and most recommended weight for sparring.
A 16oz pair of boxing gloves provide a decent workout for your lungs and muscular endurance, while it’s not the best for bag and pad work, it will definitely raise the intensity up a notch!
We would recommend the 16 oz weight for adults over approx 65 kg.

18 OZ

18 oz is our heaviest boxing glove weight available and we would recommend this weight for larger framed boxers sparring.
It will provide the best endurance workout or all weights and will definitely fatigue the boxer faster than any other weight.
